Winter Spots to Stop Between Banff and Radium Hot Springs

The journey to Radium Hot Springs, BC is just as beautiful in winter as it is in any other season! If you’re traveling from the east, enjoy the snowy scenery and crisp mountain air along the way. Throughout the drive, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to stop and explore, with winter hikes, snowshoe trails, and scenic day-use areas. Be sure to check out our favorite spots to snap a great photo or stretch your legs along Highway 93 between Banff and Radium Hot Springs, where snow covered peaks and frosty landscapes make for the perfect winter getaway.

Stops are listed North – South. Remember to pick up your National Parks Pass for the duration of your time in Kootenay National Park. Without stops, Highway 93 between Banff and Radium Hot Springs takes approximately 1.5 hours to drive.

Continental Divide

At the border of British Columbia and Alberta, stand on the Continental Divide! This is the dividing point between the Pacific and Atlantic watersheds. In winter, the Continental Divide offers a peaceful, snowy landscape perfect for exploring. The Fireweed Loops trails (ranging in length from 0.5 k.m. – 2 k.m.) Lead you through a quiet, wintery forest where you can enjoy the crisp air and snow covered scenery. Interpretive signs along the shorter loop tell the story of regeneration after the wildfire of 1968.

Marble Canyon

Marble Canyon is an iconic stop in the Kootenay National Park, especially in winter when the landscape is transformed into a winter wonderland. Snowshoeing is a popular way to explore the area, with trails winding through snowy forests and along the Tokkumm Creek. Bridges criss-cross over the creek, offering stunning views of the bright blue waters in the canyon below, now framed by snow and ice. At the end of the trail, find the iconic Parks Canada red chairs, perfect for relaxing and snapping a winter photo amid the snowy scenery.

Numa Falls

Numa Falls rest area is the perfect spot along Highway 93. A short walk from the parking area leads to a breathtaking viewpoint, where the icy cascade of Numa Falls is framed by snow-covered trees and a sparkling frost. The sight of the falls is truly mesmerizing in the winter months. The rest area is equipped with washrooms and a picnic area to relax.

Dolly Varden

Little ones in the car? Stop in at Dolly Varden on your drive for a break to play on the playground! The Dolly Varden rest area is a great spot to stretch the legs while road tripping through Kootenay National Park. Learn about wildlife overpasses and underpasses through the interpretive signage.

Cobb Lake

The Cobb Lake Trail is perfect for a quick hike or snowshoe! The trail is 2.7km one way and takes about 2 hours to complete. Winding through a serene forest, descending to Swede Creek before ascending to a small lake, surrounded by snow covered trees.

Kootenay Valley Viewpoint

The Kootenay Valley Viewpoint offers an amazing view of the Kootenay River Valley and snowcapped mountains. Especially stunning to watch the sunrise or sunset, with snow-covered terrain and crisp winter air adding to the beauty. Just 10 minutes before reaching the Village of Radium, the Kootenay Valley Viewpoint is the perfect spot to take in the serene winter views and capture the magic of the season.

Radium Hot Springs pools

The iconic Radium Hot Springs pools welcome visitors from all over the globe to soak in the naturally-heated waters. After a day of winter adventures, what better way to unwind than by relaxing in the warm, soothing pools while surrounded by snow-covered mountains? Open daily, the Radium Hot Springs pools are a must-do on any visit to the Village of Radium in any season.

Sinclair Canyon

The southern end of the Kootenay National Park has a dramatic exit! The Sinclair Canyon with its towering rockfaces dusted in snow, forms the beautiful entrance to the Village of Radium Hot Springs. Explore the Sinclair Canyon area by stopping at a viewpoint to capture the snowy landscape or hike the Juniper-Sinclair Trail to get a birds-eye view of the Canyon, mountains, and Village.
